Project NaNoWriMo: The Thrill of the New

Starting a new book is like starting a new relationship: everything is exciting and wonderful and you can’t see how this magical relationship could ever sour or go south.

You daydream about your story, long to spend every available moment with your story, and all the flaws are easy to overlook.

Those first few days with a new story are really exciting and magical, and I love every minute of it.

That’s me, right now, in these first couple of days of NaNoWriMo. I’m loving every minute of writing. I love spending time diving into this story that’s been brewing in my head for years and unpack it, see what’s there. I love getting to learn who these characters are and what messes they’re going to get into.

I also know that a darker point is coming, which makes these moments right now deliciously sweet, because I’m still riding the high of the “new”. In this case, a new story.

Part of it is also I’ve been desperate to get back into writing. I feel better when I’m writing, and I haven’t really been productive these past couple of weeks as I prepped for NaNo. I could definitely noticed a difference. Now that I’m consistently plugging away at a story, it just feels better. Thank goodness.

If you find yourself in a similar spot–excited and super pumped–embrace it! Ride that creative wave! It’s really fun!

BUT

Don’t be surprised if that creative waves crests and you find yourself sitting at your computer frustrated and feeling stupid in a week or two. It happens. Expect it, but don’t let it defeat you. Hang on and power through. Make yourself write even when it’s hard or your don’t want to.

Current NaNo progress:

Day Five: November 5 , 2020

Daily Word Count: 2131

Word Count Goal: 2000/day

Total Word Count so Far: 8177

Currently feeling: Still riding the high, but starting to flag a little.
