I feel like there was a period in publishing where the romance was overrun with a chaotic, messy love triangle. So much that it became not only a part of the social lexicon, but an identity to wear on a t-shirt! (Hello, #teamjacob!) What is this chokehold that love triangles have on us?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m totally susceptible, but I don’t know why. Is it the fantasy of being desired and loved? Is it the dramatic chaos that we devour like our mother’s afternoon soap operas?

Whatever the black magic is, we can’t get enough. And I guarantee you that we will keep coming back for more and more because love triangles are like a drug. (Dare I say, like our own “personal brand of heroin”? IYKYK) It’s a well established trope for a reason, and regardless of industry trends, it’s not going to roll over and die.

These books are delicious, and believe me when I say I devoured these unhinged love triangles like a feral raccoon. This is just my personal best (and worst) list.

Don’t hate me.

Fifth Place: Shadow and Bone – Alina/ Mal/ The Darkling

Okay. Let’s just admit that we all love a bad boy. But the spell The Darkling had on us was definitely unhinged. So much so that we would willingly trade in a stable, loyal best friend for what? Mystery and shadow? What were we thinking? We were willing to overlook so much corruption because of … tension. (You know the kind I’m talking about.)

I don’t care how deeply you understand me, sir. You are waving red flags all over the place.

Fourth Place: The Selection – America/Maxon/Aspen

I always recommend this book to reluctant girl readers by promising them it’s like The Bachelor on dystopian steroids. It’s so ridiculously delicious, isn’t it? The drama, the fantasy, the dresses! But even with all that, it’s still the absolute worst case of “Girl, make up your mind!” I’ve ever seen.

The fact that America enters this competition with her emotions still entwined with her boyfriend makes it stickier than lip gloss. Meanwhile, a dreamy, actual prince is walking around all tortured and swoony…

Good grief.

Third Place: Red Queen – Mare/Cal/Maven

I still don’t actually know if I’ve recovered from this. The emotional manipulation and mental torture from that book caused so many trust issues. For those who don’t know, the book starts feeling like, “Oh no, she has to choose between two princes. Shucks.” To “Everything is psychologically and emotionally on fire.”

Honestly, kudos to Aveyard for planting the seeds of this betrayal and heartbreak so well that I’m pretty sure no one survived the soul-crushing wreckage of this book.

Second Place: Twilight – Bella/Edward/Jacob

Are you surprised? This one love triangle fused itself not only into our hearts, but into the very fabric of pop culture and society. EVERYONE had a opinion on which team they fell. There were TSHIRTS, for crying out loud.

Edward was mysterious, dangerous, gorgeous, and rich. But he was also moody and melancholy, and not always emotional available.

Jacob was open, loyal, warm, and ripped. But he had a hard time with the “No means NO” concept.

Somehow this became the defining romance discourse of a generation. What truly elevated this triangle into legendary status was how deeply people projected onto it. Readers chose based on their own romantic psychology and then defended their position like constitutional lawyers.

The most unhinged part? The imprinting subplot. I will not elaborate.

First Place: The Hunger Games – Katniss/Peeta/Gale

This wasn’t just a battle between love interests, this was choosing an ideology. On one side, you have Peeta, the symbol of compassion, kindness, resilience, peace, and stability. Every time Katniss drifted toward numbness or despair, Peeta pulled her back toward humanity. He reminded her that surviving isn’t enough if survival costs your soul.

On the flip side, there is Gale, the revolutionary seeking revenge and justice through violence. And the uncomfortable thing? He wasn’t entirely wrong. The Capitol was monstrous. People were dying, and entire districts were being destroyed.

Meanwhile, Katniss is literally just trying to stay alive.

The genius (and hot-button debate) wasn’t “Oh, who will the girl pick?” It was, “What kind of person will Katniss become?” Because she wasn’t choosing a boy, she was choosing her version of the future. She was choosing how to live after violence, upheaval and trauma.

(For the record, I’m team Peeta)

Runners up:

Vampire Diaries: Elena/ Stefan/ Damon Stability and security versus… cheekbones? Forehead smack.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: Laura Jean/ Josh/ Peter The least diabolic and probably the most fun. I really did love this one.

Final Thoughts

There’s always one emotionally safe option and one total catastrophe for our poor FMC to choose from. And we love it. Add in unresolved trauma, yearning, and at least one near-death experience and I guarantee you, we readers will keep coming back for more and more.
